Warm-Up & Timing
Freeing up the hips and shoulders, then tuning your ear to the clave so the salsa pulse takes hold in your body before a single step is taken.
Basics & Spins
The on-1 basic, the cross-body lead, turns to either side and a little solo shine footwork — the core vocabulary, rehearsed in both the lead and follow roles.
Partner Connection
Settling into an easy frame, giving and reading the lead, and putting the steps to work with a partner as the whole room keeps swapping around.
Linking & Flavour
Joining the moves into flowing runs and layering in Cuban body motion and arm styling so the dancing begins to take on a character of its own.
Freestyle & Stretch
Open dancing to full tracks with a rotation of partners to bank the hour's work, rounded off with an easy stretch to wind down.
About Salsa Dance Classes in Nottingham
Of all the Latin partner dances, salsa is the most welcoming place to begin — an upbeat, rhythm-driven style that grew out of Cuban son, mambo and a long heritage of Afro-Caribbean grooves. Our weekly salsa classes in Nottingham open up both Cuban-style and cross-body (LA and New York) foundations, taking in footwork, partner connection, turn patterns, solo shines and the musicality that turns a counted routine into a danced one. Because partners swap through every session, you develop the flexible, read-anyone touch a real social floor demands.
Nottingham has Latin nights and a packed student scene between the University of Nottingham and NTU, yet a reliable weekly class for adult beginners and improvers has been a tricky thing to nail down. Ours run from our studio in Nottingham city centre, a short stroll from Old Market Square and the Lace Market, welcoming dancers from across town and in from Beeston, West Bridgford, Long Eaton and as far as Derby and Mansfield. With the NET tram dropping you in the middle of it all, everything you pick up on the night is built to head straight out onto the social scene.
There is no need to bring a partner, and a complete blank slate is absolutely fine. With a partner swap every few minutes, the entire room ends up dancing as one, and while a slick-soled shoe helps the spins along, anything you find comfortable will see you through a first visit. Take a look across all 20 of our dance classes in Nottingham, or gather everyone together for a one-off salsa hen party.

What Salsa Gives You
Come On Your Own
Partners rotate the whole way through, so there is nobody you need to bring. Turn up solo, with a friend or as a group — you will dance the entire room and pick up a few friends as you go.
A Skill That Travels
You will find salsa floors in almost every city going. Get the basics down here and you can head out and dance anywhere, from a night out in town to a festival overseas.
Hear the Music
There is a lot going on inside a salsa track, and learning to pick the clave, the bassline and the breaks out of it reshapes the way you listen. We weave that musicality through the lessons from day one.
Fitness With Friends
Quick footwork and spirited partner work give your heart and lungs a real session while you build trust, sharpen coordination and enjoy the lift of moving in step with someone else.
Your Salsa Dance Journey
From your very first basic step to dancing with confidence at a Latin night — here is the way it unfolds.
Finding the Beat
Getting Started
It all kicks off with the on-1 basic, the cross-body lead and a right turn to get you moving. Hearing the clave inside the track, stepping on the beat it points you to, and easing into the feel of holding and travelling alongside a partner.
What to Bring
Throw on whatever you can move freely in and a shoe that slips rather than sticks — smooth leather, dance shoes or a clean pair of socks are all spot on. Leave the deep-tread trainers behind so nothing snags as you turn.
Building Moves
Developing Technique
Turns to the inside and outside, hand changes and an early copa widen out what you can do, while dancing each side of the partnership shows you exactly how lead and follow answer one another.
Partner Skills
Each new partner the rotation hands you feels a little more natural, and it clicks that a solid connection lives in your frame and your timing, not in how hard you hold on.
Out Dancing
Flowing Combinations
Threading your turns and patterns into smooth, musical runs that travel with the song. Folding in Cuban body movement, arm styling and a little of your own flavour.
Social Nights
Ready to give a Latin night a proper go, confident enough to ask someone up and keep your cool when the floor gets packed.
The Salsero
Advanced Patterns
Extended sequences, dips, cheeky shine breaks and really listening as you dance — hitting the breaks, playing off the accents and giving each track its own story.
What Comes Next
Pick up bachata or tango to stretch your partner work, travel out to a congress or festival, or get stuck into Cuban casino and rueda for something completely different.
Salsa Dance FAQ
The things people tend to check with us before they first set foot on the salsa floor.
Could someone with zero experience start salsa from nothing? +
Without question. The entire dance is built around one repeating shift of weight, and the second your feet settle into that pattern the rest slots in around it. Our Nottingham classes hold a calm, encouraging pace, taking each turn apart into manageable chunks before stitching them together, so first-timers come up to speed quickly and never feel left behind.
Do I need a partner to come to your Nottingham salsa classes? +
Not at all. Dancers move around the floor on a regular swap, so over one session you partner with a good mix of people in both the lead and follow roles. Most of our regulars walk in on their own, and you will get a friendly welcome whatever stage you are at.
What shoes are best for dancing salsa? +
Reach for something with a smooth sole that lets the foot pivot cleanly. A leather sole or a proper dance shoe turns lovely and freely, though a fresh pair of socks works fine while you give it a go. Leave the heavy-grip trainers at home, as they grab the floor and can twist a knee halfway through a spin.
How much are salsa classes in Nottingham? +
Each drop-in works out at £10, with no sign-up fee and no form to fill in. Ready to commit? A four-week run comes to £32, bringing every class down to £8. There is no membership and no contract — simply come along whenever the timetable suits you.
Whereabouts in Nottingham do the salsa classes happen? +
Our weekly regulars meet at our studio in Nottingham city centre, a short walk from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and handy for the Lace Market and Hockley. The NET tram and the train station are both close by, so it is an easy hop in from Beeston, West Bridgford and beyond. Ask us and we will point you to the right session.
What separates Cuban salsa from the cross-body style? +
Cuban salsa, called casino, circles around a central point and leans into Afro-Cuban movement, often danced in a group rueda. The cross-body styles — LA and New York — travel up and down one straight line, with the follow passing from one end to the other. We cover both so you can step onto any social floor and feel settled.
My timing is all over the place — can I still learn salsa? +
Honestly, yes, and you are in plenty of good company. Keeping time is a skill you build rather than a gift you are born with. We count the beats out loud, clap the pulse together and grow the basic step on top of it, and inside a few weeks the rhythm starts arriving on its own.
What salsa music do you play during a class? +
A broad mix of Latin sound — golden-era Fania classics, punchy salsa dura, Cuban timba and the gentler salsa romántica, with a few modern crossover tracks thrown in. The moment you start picking out the clave and the percussion underneath the melody, every song begins to sound different.
Does salsa count as a proper workout? +
It really does. Constant footwork, turns and partner movement build into a genuine cardio session that hardly feels like exercise. An hour on the floor quietly strengthens your stamina, balance and coordination while you are far too caught up in it to notice.
Are one-to-one salsa lessons available? +
Yes — we can set up private tuition for individuals or couples on request. It works well for a wedding first dance, polishing your technique or simply climbing the levels faster. Drop us a line and let us know what you are hoping to work on.
