About Hip-Hop Dance Classes in Nottingham

Hip-hop is the dance that emerged from the 1970s block parties of the Bronx, taking shape next to the DJs, the MCs and the broader culture knitted around them. Our weekly hip-hop classes in Nottingham reach right back to those origins: the bounce and the rock, the party steps of the old school and the grooves of the new, the isolations, the freestyle and the musicality that lets you truly hold a conversation with a beat. It is the grounded, social wing of hip-hop — powered by feel and attitude instead of a polished screen finish — and the heritage of the whole movement travels with it.

Nottingham hums with energy through its club nights and the enormous student crowd shared between the University of Nottingham and NTU, yet a dependable weekly class where adult beginners and improvers can learn the foundations properly has been hard to track down. To get one off the ground we have taken a central studio in Nottingham city centre, minutes from the Lace Market, Hockley and Old Market Square and within comfortable reach of Beeston, West Bridgford, Long Eaton and out towards Derby and Mansfield. With the NET tram dropping you smack in the middle of town, everything taught stays rooted in the culture while being pitched so any curious newcomer can pick it up cold.

You can rock up with zero background and zero gear — comfy clothes and clean, flat-soled trainers are all it takes. Everyone kicks off with the groove, and each new layer piles on from one week to the next. Take a look across the whole line-up of 20 dance classes in Nottingham, or rally the crew for a one-off street dance hen party.

What You Get From Hip-Hop

Straight From the Culture

You take on the true foundations — the bounce, the party steps and the grooves that sparked the whole thing — rather than a routine stuck over a hip-hop track. Both the backstory and the feel arrive as part of the package.

Tuned to the Track

Hip-hop trains your ear on the kick, the snare and the quiet pockets between them. Your body learns to ride the pocket, catch the accents and shade in texture rather than merely counting along.

Find Your Own Flavour

Freestyle gives you a means of speaking through movement with nothing set in stone. That bounce, that swagger, that voice are yours alone — hip-hop leaves you room to put a personal stamp on everything you do.

A Workout in Disguise

Steady bouncing, level drops and driving grooves serve up full-body cardio. Expect to break a sweat, smile from start to finish and head home with energy to spare.

Your Hip-Hop Dance Journey

Starting at that very first bounce and working towards holding your own in a cypher — this is how the path generally runs.

Week 1–4

Finding the Bounce

Getting Started

Things kick off with the bounce, the rock and one or two relaxed two-steps. This first stretch is about loosening the body, sending your weight down into the beat and getting at ease with looking loose rather than rigid.

What to Bring

Easy-moving clothes and a flat, cushioned pair of trainers. Nothing needs buying, and since expressing yourself is part of the appeal, wear whatever feels most like you.

Month 2–3

Stacking the Steps

Party-Step Vocabulary

The running man, wop, prep, smurf and a handful of new-school grooves and isolations gradually stock your toolkit, giving you the moves that every routine and circle draws upon.

First Freestyle

Quick rounds of guided improv built on small briefs — a single groove across eight counts — so leaning on your gut feels like a laugh instead of a spotlight.

Month 4–6

Groove and Meaning

Routines With Roots

Lengthier combinations that knit the foundations together with real personality, plus the history sitting behind each step — its origins and the message it carries.

Hearing the Layers

Dancing to individual parts of the track — the drums, the bassline, the vocal, the silences — the deeper musicality that marks a dancer out from someone just ticking off counts.

Month 6+

The Cypher Dancer

Owning the Circle

Comfortable stepping into a cypher, settled inside choreography and shaping a style of your own, with the odd jam or showcase slot available whenever the mood strikes.

What Comes Next

Move on to breaking, popping or locking in our street dance class, sample commercial for a tighter choreography slant, or sink further into the local freestyle community.

Hip-Hop Dance FAQ

The things first-timers most often check with us ahead of their opening hip-hop session.

I have never danced a step — is hip-hop a realistic place to begin? +

It is genuinely the place most of our crowd starts. Every opening lesson is anchored on the bounce — that easy, weighted sway sitting beneath all hip-hop movement — and as soon as your body catches it, the party steps and freestyle grow on top. We keep our Nottingham sessions warm and unrushed, so nobody walking in for the first time ends up feeling out of their depth.

Is there a dress code, and what should I bring along? +

Reach for anything you can move loosely in — joggers or baggy bottoms with a tee or hoodie — and flat trainers with a bit of padding for quick weight shifts. A bottle of water and an easy-going head for the early stumbles go a long way. Self-expression runs through the culture, so come along in whatever feels most like you.

How much does a hip-hop class in Nottingham cost? +

One drop-in is priced at £10, with no paperwork and no joining fee attached. Keen to commit? A four-week block runs to £32, dropping each class to £8. We keep things membership-free and contract-free — simply show up on the weeks the timetable works for you.

Whereabouts in Nottingham do the hip-hop sessions run? +

Our regular weekly crowd meets at a studio we hire in Nottingham city centre, a couple of minutes from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and handily placed for the Lace Market and Hockley. The NET tram and the railway station both sit nearby, making it an easy run in from Beeston, West Bridgford and beyond. Give us a shout and we will point you at the right session.

How is hip-hop different from commercial dance? +

Hip-hop is built on groove, the underpinning party-step language and the freestyle that grew out of the culture and its social origins. Commercial dance chases a glossier, screen-ready look, carving routines for pop promos and the stage. Both run here in Nottingham, so you can sample the raw foundation and the polished edition and decide which one tugs at you.

What makes your hip-hop class unlike a street dance class? +

Our hip-hop class is centred on the groove and the party-step toolkit — bounce, rock, old-school plus new-school grooves and a big dose of freestyle. Street dance reaches deeper into breaking, popping and locking — punchy battle styles, each loaded with its own intricate technique. There is loads of crossover, but our weight sits on feel and foundation ahead of power tricks.

How much freestyle is there, and what if my mind goes blank? +

Freestyle is folded in from the first week, though always with a structure around it and never dropped on you cold. We start off with tiny briefs — a single move, one groove, eight counts — so making it up plays out like a game instead of an exam. Freezing happens to everyone early doors, and the coached drills quietly dissolve it inside a few weeks.

What sort of music gets played in class? +

A broad sweep of hip-hop and funk — heavy old-school boom-bap, golden-era favourites, raw funk breaks and modern cuts carrying a fat pocket. The moment your ear tunes to the kick, the snare and the breathing space between them, it changes how you move and how you hear records ever after.

Does hip-hop dancing genuinely count towards fitness? +

It absolutely does. Endless bouncing, level changes and lively grooves add up to a true cardio session that develops your stamina, coordination and core. Your mind stays parked on the music and the steps, so the time runs away and it scarcely feels like working out.

Do you offer private or small-group hip-hop coaching? +

We do. Private coaching and crew sessions can be lined up any time you ask, and they work brilliantly for drilling the basics, tightening freestyle or readying a routine for a showcase or event. Tell us what you would like to crack and we will get the session arranged.
