Warm-Up & Posture
Gentle body rolls, lazy hip circles and tall posture drills to switch the spine on and tune you to the slow, playful rhythm that gives burlesque its swagger.
Struts, Bumps & Grinds
The trademark moves picked apart one by one — the runway strut, the playful hip bump, a melting grind and a shoulder shimmy with bags of attitude.
Chair & Floor Work
Curving over a chair, rising back through it with poise and melting into low poses — the bold, sculpted lines that lend a number its theatrical punch.
Boa & Glove Flair
Flourishing a feather boa, drawing a long satin glove down your arm and snapping a fan open — timing a prop so it hits the beat with a cheeky glance.
Routine & Cool Down
Threading the lot into a short cabaret piece danced full-out in character, then an easy stretch to settle the body and lock in the night's work.
About Burlesque Dance Classes in Nottingham
Burlesque is the flirty, glittering business of the cabaret tease — equal parts dance, comedy and out-and-out showmanship. Our weekly burlesque classes in Nottingham hand you the vintage toolkit that makes it work: the strut and the pose, the bump-and-grind, slow body rolls and the shimmy, plus chair work and floor work for a proper dose of theatre. We add sparkle with a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan, then build it into short numbers you perform with a cheeky wink — fully clothed the whole way through.
Nottingham knows how to put on a show, yet a dependable weekly burlesque class for grown-ups has been a surprisingly tricky thing to track down in the city. Ours run from our studio in Nottingham city centre, an easy stroll from Old Market Square, the Left Lion and the Lace Market, and pulling in dancers from across town as well as Beeston, West Bridgford, Long Eaton and out toward Derby and Mansfield. With two big student crowds from the University of Nottingham and NTU and the NET tram dropping you right in the thick of it, the mood stays warm, mischievous and completely free of judgement — a room where a bit of sass is the entire point.
In this room any body counts as a stage body, whatever your age or level, and complete beginners slot straight in. Pop on heels for the tall showgirl silhouette or keep to bare feet for the grounded sections, and no one expects any particular fitness or bendiness before you begin. Browse all 20 of our dance classes in Nottingham, or rally a group for a cheeky burlesque hen party.

What Burlesque Gives You
Confidence You Carry
Learning to command a room in slow, deliberate motion pays off well beyond the studio. Dancers head home standing taller, moving with more nerve and far more at ease in their own skin.
Vintage Cabaret Sparkle
Boas, gloves, fans and chairs turn into your toys. You will master the props, the statuesque poses and the tongue-in-cheek timing that load classic burlesque with glamour and spectacle.
A Character to Step Into
Burlesque hands you a persona to slip behind — a swagger, a look, a glance. Trying on that fearless version of yourself is freeing and a real joy to perform.
Every Body Belongs
You do not need to hit any benchmark for size, shape, age or fitness. Burlesque celebrates the body you bring today, and our room stays warm, playful and entirely without judgement.
Your Burlesque Dance Journey
From a nervous first strut to an act you could take to any stage — here is the way it comes together.
Owning the Strut
Getting Started
It opens with a self-assured runway walk, drifting hip circles, a shrug of a shimmy and a held, statuesque pose. It is all about taking your time and milking each beat rather than rushing on.
What to Wear
Something fitted you can read your shapes in, with a hit of glamour if you fancy it. Heels for height or bare feet for grip — entirely your shout.
Bringing the Cheek
Building Technique
Bumps and grinds, body rolls, chair work and your first floor poses knit together into snappy little sequences brimming with attitude.
Finding a Persona
You begin shaping a burlesque alter ego of your own — a name, a look, a walk — and this is where a curious newcomer quietly turns into a performer.
Working the Props
Full Routines
Full cabaret pieces built around props — a swishing boa, a slow glove peel, a flick of the fan. You learn to work the entire space, keep all eyes on you and draw out a pause until it really lands.
The Art of the Tease
Comic timing, the slow reveal, locked eye contact and the right track — the stagecraft that lifts a string of moves into a genuine act.
Stage-Ready Showgirl
Showcase & Beyond
The chance to step out at a cabaret night or showcase, putting together your own solo with original choreography, a costume idea and a song that is unmistakably yours.
What Comes Next
Step up to heels class for added sparkle, pull a few friends together for a group booking, or keep fine-tuning the routine that feels truest to you.
Burlesque Dance FAQ
What people most often want cleared up before their first time in the spotlight.
Can I join a burlesque class with no dancing behind me? +
Easily — most newcomers arrive having never set foot in a studio. Burlesque prizes swagger and personality over flawless steps, so we unpick each strut, shimmy and pose nice and slowly. By the end of one weekly hour in Nottingham a first-timer can run through a short routine and feel like a proper turn.
What should I throw on for a burlesque session? +
Something snug enough to follow your shapes in the mirror, plus a dash of vintage sparkle if you are in the mood. Heels hand you that cabaret line and bare feet suit the floor work, so take your pick. A glove or a feather boa of your own is a nice touch, though we keep a stash of props for everyone to share.
Is burlesque really about stripping off? +
Not in our room — you stay fully clothed from start to finish. Burlesque is the tongue-in-cheek craft of the tease: a slow glove reveal, a flirt behind a boa, a cheeky bump and grind, rather than any actual stripping. What you take home is poise, presence and the boldness to own a stage, and none of that wears off when the music ends.
What do burlesque classes in Nottingham cost? +
A single drop-in lands at £10, with nothing to join and no paperwork. Want to dig in? A four-week block is £32, which trims each class to £8. There is no contract and no membership tying you down, so you can wander in whenever the timetable fits your week.
Where in Nottingham do the burlesque classes run? +
Our weekly regulars meet at our studio in Nottingham city centre, a short walk from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and close to the Lace Market and Hockley. The room is private and screened off, which suits the cheeky side of burlesque, with the NET tram and the station near enough to bring people in from Beeston, West Bridgford and further out.
Am I going to have to dance in heels? +
Not unless you want to. Heels lift you up and lend that old-school showgirl shape, though heaps of dancers are perfectly happy in bare feet or soft flats, and the floor work in particular tends to call for them. Start in whatever keeps you steady, and if heels appeal later we will work on your ankle strength and balance to get you there.
Would burlesque suit me if I am short on confidence? +
It might be just the thing. A fair few of our gutsiest dancers turned up sure they could never command a room. Burlesque gives you a character to slip behind and an unhurried, deliberate way of moving that quietly melts the nerves, so the confidence tends to show up sooner than you would imagine.
Which moves will the class actually cover? +
Think struts and held poses, hip bumps and grinds, slinky body rolls and the shimmy, with chair work and floor work that put your attitude on show. We fold in a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan, then shape the lot into a short, glitzy routine you sign off with a knowing wink.
Will burlesque work for any body shape or age? +
Every one of them. Burlesque grew from the belief that there is no wrong body for the stage, and our adult classes welcome dancers from their late teens all the way to their seventies. There is no size, shape or fitness mark to hit beforehand — a bit of curiosity and a streak of mischief carry you through.
Can I book a one-to-one or a group burlesque session? +
Of course. Private coaching and small group bookings can be sorted on request, whether you want a confidence top-up, a birthday treat or a focused run at a routine. Get in touch and we will put together a session around exactly what you and your friends are after.
